INSTRUCTION

Task 1 / Social Media Analytics

On 22nd April 2024, I had my first class of Digital and Social Media Communication, and we were subsequently briefed on the first two projects. The first project being a task to utilize Google Analytics to analyze Google Merchandise Store.

On the second week, two of my group members dropped the module, we were then left with three of us, Ke Bo Zhi and Lina. It was a great challenge to work with them with the language barrier we are facing. They only speak mandarin with little English and I only spoke English.

Task 2 / Content Ideation

In Project 2 we were to look into a real business which has an Instagram account, and our aim is to create Instagram posts for the client.

I searched for different business, and I came upon Mingle Café which was quite a hip café. I contacted the copartner and made a proposal for our project. Mr. Kuan was all for helping aspiring young adults to understand a business set up, he agreed to meet.

I set up a meeting on 19th May 2024 at the location of the café, unfortunately Lina was too busy with her assignments and Ke Bo Zhi felt the travelling expenses to Mingle Café for the meet will exceed his monthly expenses. Mr. Kuan being very busy, I took the initiative to go ahead with the meeting. Mr. Kuan being an understanding person even suggested a virtual meet, hearing my two other group members’ difficulty in attending the meet in person, however the two team members declined the virtual meet.

I proceeded to meet Mr. Kuan at the Café trying to get a grasp and to understand the business. We talked about the theme of the café, the image portrayal of the café, target market and the use of social media. The team came up with different social media contents for the café and share it with Mr. Kuan for his feedback.

Task 3 / Content Planning

Project 3, we were supposed to plan the posts and share it with Mr. Kuan. The work was divided amongst the three of us and I posted my part for Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 and Week 4. We updated Mr. Kuan on group chat when we upload our work, he would go into the google shared drive and shared his feedback and comments. My team members were not very open with the feedback given and both felt I have created a burden for them for choosing Mingle Café and to face Mr. Kuan and his comments and feedback. They stuck to their decisions on the posts created and did not bother to edit or rectify them.

REFLECTION

Experience
The whole experience to me was quite messy, firstly with the language barrier and my team members were not as open minded as I would like them to be. They were not accepting the co-partner to the business, Mr. Kuan’s constructive feedback. They were not on board since inception as they did not seem to want to meet up at the café to understand the business.

Observation
It is the first time I have encountered team members who were uncooperative and unpleasant. Most feedback was taken negatively and there does not seem to be room for improvement. I had to learn how work around their timeline and their feelings of frustration with the co-partner to finish the projects.

Findings
With the whole lack of synergy amongst the team members, I felt I had to be the one to carry the weight of the projects or none of it will move forward. All in all, Mr. Kuan was a source of inspiration as he guided and briefed me with depth on the business. He was patient with my questions, and he made constructive criticism for us to think out of the box and make better visual judgement of our posts. There was no leader appointed but I thought I had to step up to manage the whole projects. It was a challenge to manage people who do not seem to be on board with things and chasing after deadlines became one of my To-Do lists.
