INSTRUCTION

Task 1 / Proposal Development

Week 1

During the first week of lecture, we are informed that students from different major are divided into different classroom. Soon after, we are task to form into group that learn at least two specializations.

Unfortunately, two of my group members are not qualify so they have to drop out. Ms Vitayaa form a group for me, but she pairs me Liang Ling, the person that cause me so much hell back in Semester 4. I ask Ms Vitayaa to change it, but she brushes me off. In ended I decide to do the project individual upon the suggestion from Ms. Anis.

Week 2

I written down a list of ideas on to determine the direction of the project. After researching for ideas based on the topic I listed out. I have decided my project will be focus on mental health

Project Directions:
  • Deforestation In Malaysia
  • Improving Children’s Literacy Rate
  • Combat Procrastination or Mental Health
  • Sock Packaging for Kids

Week 3

My idea was inspired by Mind Matters by Jessica Yeap, One Mindful Mind (OMM) by Rajlaxm Jain and Mindnosis kit by Sara Lopez Ibanez. I intended to create a self-help kit target toward teenager and young adult struggling with their own mental health. At that moment, I was struggling come up with a product that different compare towards the others and with lack of notable competitor make it more difficult to identify the unique selling point for my product

Task 2 / Design Proposition

Week 4

After Consultation with Ms. Anis, I made some changes according to her feedback. The flash cards and the interactive emotion board are the weakest parts, so I change it to motivational cards and a layered table calendar and my idea for a cottagecore aesthetic for the design didn't work since it only cater toward female, so I change it to Japandi style to make it more gender neutral. I also made sketches for a brand identity, collaterals, physical and digital presences.

For the brand name I intended to be tied to nature to fit in the Japandi aesthetic, In the end I have decide that the title will be Hygge.

Brand Names:

  • Hygge
  • Cozy Conner
  • Open Oasis
  • Douglas Fir
  • Stick & Stone
  • Rosewood

Week 5

During Week 5, I have updated the Overview & Context and the Project Goals. I even added Audience Research, Problem Identification, Competitive Analysis, SWOT Analysis, Key Differentiators.

In the Initial Design Concepts Section I change the Packaging Design concept to a record player because I felt that the pervious concept is not original. Additionally, I expand it further to tackle certain elements for the brand.

Updated Version:

In order to make my kit distinguishable I have included the idea of a puzzle box, but unfortunately the concept is complicate to tied it together with mental health thus it is shelved. In addition, I have included goal calendar for user to keep track on their goal

During the process of digitalizing of the logo, I find it tricky as the shape and thickness ended up looking inconsistent. For the graphic elements, I repurpose the Logomark idea to create it.

Task 3 / Concept Presentation

Week 6

Wellness Journal:

From the wellness journal layout I have look though, I was left confuse because there are so many different topics to cover on improving one's mental health. When created the draft I was left stuck on how to make my layout easy to understand and to make it distinctive.

Fig 5.1 Unfinish Layout Draft

After watching a video, about journal recommendations from a professional therapist. I learned that different journals cater to a certain type of behavior. So, I took inspiration from The Five-Minute Journal and The Affirmation Pages: Anti-Anxiety Vol. 1. Journal to create a beginner friendly version of the wellness journal focusing on goals but also contains gratitude and affirmation

Affirmation Flash Card:

The affirmation flash card is inspired by Fedrigoni Imaginative Swatch Book. Where each and every flash card are binned together, and each binned flash card is categorized into four different types which are Confidence, Self-Love, Motivation and Personal Growth.  Affirmation cards contain positive statements that can help people combat negative belief and to build trust on themselves. By copy the positive statement on the Wellness Journey can help user remember better.

Week 7

Brand Guidelines:

For the brand guidelines I use the Option 4 logo shown in Fig 4.17 as the final logo. I also change the graphic elements; I felt that the previous design is too complicated to be suited for the mental health topic. I redesign to make the simpler, so it is easy on the eye and to make translatable for other deliverables. As for the tagline wrote down several option until I finally settle with "Be kind to your mind".

Tagline Options:

  • Pour your worries away
  • Box of Happiness
  • Be kind to your mind

Artworks:

For the packaging design, I have eliminated the interactive idea, and I decided to go with a simple mailer box packaging due to lack of experiences with packaging design and the fact that I don't have sufficient mockup to bring the interactive element to life. At first, I use organic shapes for the design. But then I later found out it don't fit in with the brand, so I use the graphical elements that I establish for the brand guideline.

Fig 8.2 Final Packaging Design

In the wellness journal cover has been replaced the previous graphic design with the current one and after running a test to formatting the Journal in order to create a physical mockup. I so found out a flaw within the mockup as it had a blank spread on the middle. So, I added a spread that state inspirational quotes.

From the feed given form Ms. Anis the Goal Tracker must be flexible to be suited for different types of goals. So, I have designed the sticker sheet to cover different type of occasions.

REFLECTION

Experience
The experience of working alone this semester has definitely been more challenging given the fact that there are no group members to consult, brainstorm and share the workload. However, I did manage to complete the whole project given the guidance of Puan Anis. I am greatly thankful to her for all her support.

Observation
Again, it takes a lot of effort in working out the context of this module by working alone for this project. The module although well outlined, however, since everyone is working on a different subject, it posed a difficulty for me to have the right reference with regards to the direction of the project at the beginning. As we move along the project status, the requirement for this module becomes clearer and more manageable.

Findings
This subject taught me the methodology to approach a subject idea to a Major Project and has given me an outline on coming out with the concept on how to approach my personal project. It is systematic and overall, I have learned a lot on the approach needed from identifying a project topic to the proper analysis of the viability of a project idea until the stage of proposal presentation.
