Final Project / Stop Motion

In April 22 Week 1, We are tasked to list down our favorite stop motion and give our rationale

Video 1: Madame Tutli-Putli
I liked how the film effectively shows how the main character is suffering from anxiety by having shots of the character showing that she is scared as she was placed in a claustrophobic train cabin.

Video 2: Lost & Found
I thought the short film was quite creative and friendly. The main characters are basically knitted toys that gives a childlike friendly warm and fuzzy feeling. The creative part was it effectively used the medium of the characters to tell the story.

Video 3: Bench
I felt the ending was unexpected as the shots of the heavily set character turning against the lighter set character. At the end the lighter character was eaten by the heavier character.

In around May 13, Week 4 we are supposed to indicate the medium for stop motion and to choose to work in solo or pair, I prefer to use clay to create the characters, and I prefer working as a pair for this project.

The final project involves Stock Motion video. We had option to complete the project solo or in pairs. The duration for the Stock Motion video for solo attempt is 30 seconds and for pair work it has to last to as long as a minute.

Brainstorming Ideas

I chose to pair up with Tan Xin Yi. We assigned roles on how to complete the project, I was to prepare a storyboard and Xin Yi will create the characters. Our rough discussion was to have two characters. I proposed a draft story to Xin YI just to gather her thoughts and opinions via WhatsApp. She agreed with my rough ideas. I then proceeded to write the storyboard.

Storyboard Draft

Synopsis
The story is about a tall guy bullying a short guy. The short guy suddenly found a magic apple, ate it and grew taller. With his change of height, he gave the bully a taste of his own medicine. Now being taller bullying him.

Shooting

We used an app called Stop Motion Studio on our phones to shoot the stock motion. We mainly shot our scenes in the design studio. We arranged meetings on the availability of our time.

The story we have initially agreed upon has gone through changes, listening to Mr Martin’s feedback. The total length of the Stop Motion was 45 seconds, and we still required 15 seconds to complete the project.

The final cut of the story with Mr. Martin’s feedback we added a comedic twist to it. The finale is where the initial tall guy being envious of the short guy’s spurt in height ate the magic apple and he then shrunk in size!

Script

In the final cut of the video some of the scenes where the characters body movement doesn't give a clear message to the viewers, so I added some dialogue, as I thought it will add context. I named the short guy Matt and the tall guy Rick. Both of the characters are voiced by me.

Editing

Xin Yi confessed, she is not really good at editing, thus I decided to take up the role to do all the edits and to lengthen the video to the required 1 minute. Part of the editing, we are also required to input the music and sound effects

FEEDBACK

Week 12
  • Plan length of time to each of the scene
  • Suggest that the first scene where the bully looks down at the short guy
  • Suggest that the last scene the short guy tap on the bully's shoulder. The bully looks socked, and the short guy squash him.
Week 13
  • The video needs to be extended to 1 minute
  •  The ending is anti-climactic make the scene more interesting
  • Discuss together as a group to extend the scenes

REFLECTION

Experience
I had some mixed feelings on the project, since it is a group project, I felt my directions were not as clear as I hoped it should have been. I have the tendency to assume my partner knows what do to but in reality, she did not. I then tried to clarify and make my explanation as clear as possible. Xin Yi later understood and went on with the project.

Observation
Mr. Martin shared some good feedback without Xin Yi’s presence, I was a little skeptical as if I made drastic changes, it would be a challenge to explain the changes to Xin Yi. I decided to stick to our plans where Xin Yi is more transparent.

Findings
Shooting the Stock Motion was pretty challenging as the models that Xin Yi prepared were quite unstable. Due to their unstableness, it was difficult to have the characters stay in place in certain scenes. I had some thoughts to redo the models she has prepared but it would then be unfair for her as she has put in a lot of effort. As part of a team, I think it is important to have tolerance with each other’s work, our strengths and weaknesses.
